Informatics education: Europe cannot afford to miss the boat

According to a report of the joint Informatics Europe& ACM Europe Working Group on Informatics Education (April 2013), all of Europe´s citizens need to be educated in informatics and digital literacy in order to avoid becoming a consumer of IT instead of being a global player.

The report also makes various recommendations to solve the problems resulting from the current situation:
  1. Children shall be educated in digital literacy. This comprises the skills, but also practices of using the tools effectively and ethically.
  2. Children shall also be be taught in informatics as a separate scientific subject.
  3. Teachers need to be trained immediately.
  4. The definition of informatics curricula should rely on the existing work on this issue.
